High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers are committed to identifying each student’s potential and nurturing their talents so they can achieve their personal best.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging. This may include small-group or individual tasks, open-ended projects and opportunities for students to explore topics in greater depth. By tailoring lessons in this way, we support every learner to make strong progress and achieve their personal best.

Rich opportunities and activities

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

Opening doors to wider experiences

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

In the classroom, teachers design learning experiences that recognise and extend high potential across the intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains. Lessons are differentiated so students can work at the right level of challenge, with opportunities for:

  • Intellectual – higher-order thinking tasks, problem-solving, inquiry projects and rich open-ended questions
  • Creative – imaginative writing, creative arts activities, designing solutions and exploring ideas in new ways
  • Social-emotional – collaborative group work, leadership roles, reflection activities and supportive classroom discussions
  • Physical – hands-on learning, movement-based activities and tasks that build coordination and engagement

Teachers use flexible grouping, goal setting and extension activities to keep learning engaging and appropriately challenging, helping students develop their strengths and achieve their personal best.

Across our school

Students can take part in a wide range of opportunities to develop their talents across the four High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) domains – intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical. These include:

  • Creative arts – choir, dance groups, drama performances and art displays

    • HPGE domains: Creative, Social-emotional, Intellectual
  • Sport – school carnivals, gala days, PSSA competitions and sporting clinics

    • HPGE domains: Physical, Social-emotional
  • Leadership – Student Representative Council (SRC), house captains and other student leadership roles

    • HPGE domains: Social-emotional, Intellectual
  • Clubs and groups – interest-based groups that support creativity, teamwork and problem-solving

    • HPGE domains: Intellectual, Creative, Social-emotional
Across NSW

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is implemented in all NSW public schools under a state-wide Department of Education policy. The policy promotes engagement and challenge for every student, regardless of background, and supports talent development across the four domains of potential – intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical.

Across the state, schools are expected to use assessment and data to identify high potential and gifted students, differentiate learning in the classroom, and provide enrichment, extension and advanced learning pathways where needed. They also implement evidence-informed programs and grouping strategies, collaborate with families and the wider community, and engage in professional learning to build teacher expertise in HPGE.

Our school follows this NSW HPGE policy by tailoring classroom learning, offering targeted opportunities in the four domains, and regularly reviewing our practices to ensure high potential and gifted students are supported to achieve their personal best.
